Muhammad and Malvo kept moving. Judging from the Griffins’ sighting and others, they were living out of the Caprice. Their next stop was Baltimore. The night of the Tasker shooting, Muhammad appeared at a Subway sandwich shop in Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood. It was just before 9:00 P.M., and two employees, Marty Ruby and Holly Thompson, were closing up for the night. Muhammad, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, came in the shop, said he was from out of town, and asked politely if they were still serving. Ruby and Thompson said they were not. Muhammad asked if he could rest in his car outside, and the two employees said fine.
Muhammad then went next door to a Mobil minimart, where he bought potato chips, a brownie, and a soda. He said he hadn’t slept in two days. An hour later, when Ruby and Thompson were locking up and taking out the trash, Muhammad came out of the Caprice in his bare feet. They could see a laptop computer on the front seat, its blue screen illuminating the interior. Again Muhammad asked if it was okay to rest there.
“You’re fine, you’re okay, hon,” Ruby said, impressed at Mu-hammad’s politeness. “But don’t stay too long. The police will come. They don’t let people sleep in cars here because it’s unsafe for us workers.”
Ruby was right about the police. At 1:00 A.M., James Snyder, a Baltimore police officer, spotted the car in the parking lot of the Donut Connection next door. When he returned two hours later, the car was still there and the windows were steamed up. Suspicious, he pulled up and radioed the car’s tag number to police dispatcher Derrick K. Evans for a computer check. Snyder had no way of knowing, but it was the seventh time in eleven days that the Caprice had been investigated by police.
Evans said there was no problem with the car, but Snyder knocked on the car window and woke up Muhammad, who told Snyder he was traveling from the Washington area to visit his father near Camden, New Jersey. He asked for directions. A block off Interstate 83, which runs north to central Pennsylvania, Muhammad was a long way from Interstate 95, the route to New Jersey. Snyder saw no one else in the car but noticed that the backseat was filled with clothes, as if someone were living in the vehicle.
Another Baltimore officer arrived as backup. Officer Snyder requested a check of Muhammad’s driver’s license, which produced nothing of concern. The officer told Muhammad to move on, and he drove off.
Malvo would later say he had a pregnant woman in his sights in a Baltimore cemetery, but Muhammad called off the attack because a police helicopter was overhead. And police would find under the front passenger headrest in the Caprice the handwritten names of three schools in the city. One was a preschool. One was an elementary school. And one was the Maiden Choice School, a center for severly disabled children.
